Ingredients:

|
Pigeon peas/toor dal/thuvaram paruppu
|
½ cup / 100 gms
|
Small onions/shallots
|
10 (peeled)
|
Tomatoes (medium)
|
3 chopped
|
Brinjal
|
1 diced
|
Green chilly
|
1 slit
|
Garlic
|
8 small cloves
|
Turmeric powder
|
1/2 tsp
|
Asafoetida powder/hing/perungaya thool
|
1/2 tsp
|
Few curry leaves
|
|
Few coriander leaves
|
|
Water
|
1 + ½ cups
|
Salt
|
to taste
|
To temper:
|
|
Oil
|
2 tbsp
|
Mustard seeds
|
1/2 tsp
|
Black gram/urad dal/ulutham paruppu
|
tsp
|
Cumin seeds/jeera
|
1 tsp
|
Few curry leaves
|
|
Sambar powder( homemade or store bought)
|
1+1/2 tbsp
|
To garnish:
|
|
Chopped coriander leaves
|
Method:
- In a pressure cooker add washed pigeon peas /toor Dal, peeled onions, tomatoes, brinjal, garlic cloves green chilly, turmeric powder, asafoetida powder, curry leaves, coriander leaves and water
- Mix and close cooker. Cook for 2 whistles on high heat and 5 minutes on low heat
- Once cooked mash it well and keep it aside
- In a kadai or pan add oil and heat it. When hot add mustard seeds, urad Dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves
- As soon as mustard seeds begin to crackle add the sambar powder. Give a quick mix and immediately pour the cooked and mashed Dal/paruppu into the tempering. Add water to adjust the consistency and salt to taste
- Boil for 2 minutes and garnish with chopped coriander leaves
- Enjoy with your favourite South Indian breakfast
