Introduction:
Onion tomato chutney is a spicy, tangy South Indian chutney
which is usually served with Idli / dosa. But it can also be served with pongal,
kichadi, chapathi etc….There are several ways to prepare this chutney and this

Ingredients:
|
|
Sesame oil/gingelly oil/til oil
|
1 tbsp
|
Onion (large)
|
1 sliced
|
Tomato (medium)
|
4 sliced
|
Dried red chillies
|
4 broken into half
|
Garlic
|
4 cloves
|
Few curry leaves
|
|
Salt
|
1/2 tsp
|
For tempering:
|
|
Sesame oil/ gingelly oil/ til oil
|
1 tbsp
|
Mustard
|
1/2 tsp
|
Bengal gram / urad dal/ ulutham paruppu
|
1 tsp
|
Few curry leaves
|
|
Asafoetida powder/ hing/perungaya thool
|
1/ 8 tsp
|
Method:
- In a pan add 1 tbsp oil. When hot add dried red chillies, garlic, curry leaves and fry for 1 min on low heat
- Add sliced onion and fry .Remove the onions from the pan before they turn golden brown
- Keep it aside .In the same pan add the sliced tomatoes and salt .Cook until it turns soft and mushy
- Remove from pan and allow it to cool completely
- Grind into a smooth paste in a mixer/blender without adding water
- Transfer to a serving dish
For tempering:
- Add 1 tbsp oil to a small frying pan and when hot add mustard seeds. When it begins to crackle add bengal gram/urad dal/ulutham paruppu ,few curry leaves and asafoetida powder/hing/ perungaya thool
- Pour this over the ground chutney and serve with idli /dosa
